Lahainaluna classmates remembered James J. Lee as a talented artist, comic-book fan and something of an outsider who was picked on in school.

Lee was identified Wednesday as the man who held two Discovery Communications employees and a security guard hostage in a four-hour standoff in Silver Springs, Md., outside Washington, D.C. Tactical officers shot and killed Lee when building security cameras showed him pulling out a handgun and pointing it at a hostage, said Montgomery County Police Chief Thomas Manger. An explosive device on the gunman’s body detonated when police shot him, he said.

It’s been 2 years since I updated my blog. Guess what, I’m a father now… a father of 2!
I have a 2 year old son and a 2 month old daughter. Aren’t I lucky.

The Chinese government has devised a clever idea to rid of the poor with the great wall of disguise. If you’re poor and if you’re in the way, there will be a wall put up infront of your house. Thoughts?

The attackers were able to launch a series of pre-dawn bombings in this west-central part of the rugged Xinjiang region despite tightened security for the games. The violence — which police say killed 10 assailants and one security guard — also came just days after a militant Islamic group linked to al-Qaeda issued a new warning it would strike during the Olympics.

No group has claimed responsibility for Sunday’s attack in Kuqa county, and police have not released any evidence that a terrorist organization was involved. But tensions in Xinjiang have been simmering for decades between the Muslim minority Uighur people and the Han Chinese who make up about 90 percent of the nation’s population.

The 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing are, first and foremost, a celebration of human endurance, strength and ability. But they’re also a massive display of technological effort, from the Chinese government’s laudable (but largely ineffective) efforts to clean up the air to athletes’ performance-enhancing gadgetry.

With a single day to go before the Olympics, both government and independent readings suggest that Beijing’s air is getting worse.

And if the winds don’t change, this could wind up being one of the most polluted Olympics in modern history, with more particulate matter in the air than Atlanta in 1996 or possibly even notoriously smoggy Los Angeles in 1984.

Despite the government’s anti-smog efforts, the entire Beijing region’s pollution has been locked in by a stubborn summer weather pattern that brings air pollution up from the south, said Kenneth Rahn, a Rhode Island professor who has been studying Chinese air quality for almost a decade.

The Minnesota couple attacked today in Beijing in a stabbing that left the man dead and his wife critically injured were well-known in Southern California volleyball circles as boosters of the sport. Friends today recalled the pair for their enduring support of their daughter’s volleyball career both at UCLA, where she was a standout collegiate player, and when she joined the Olympic team in Athens four years ago.

Todd and Barbara Bachman of Lakeville, Minn., were attacked about noon in an assault witnessed by their daughter, Elisabeth “Wiz” Bachman McCutcheon, the wife of the U.S. men’s Olympic volleyball coach Hugh McCutcheon. The McCutcheons live in Irvine, not far from where the men’s team trains in Anaheim.

The attack also wounded the family’s Chinese guide, officials said.

Activists against Chinese human rights policy are stopped by security agents in Beijing Thursday.

BEIJING, China (AP) — At least two women who protested their forced evictions ahead of the Beijing Olympics were taken from their homes by Chinese police Thursday, amid ramped up efforts by activists to use the games to spotlight their causes.

Zhang Wei and Ma Xiulan, who have been vocal about the pain of losing their traditional family compounds near Tiananmen Square, were rounded up late Wednesday and early Thursday morning, according to Ma.
